It's the President and the First Lady vacationing in Asheville and eating at 12 Bones.

That's what we did last year. Look at the photograph.

***

See the big red sign in the background in that photograph? Here's my picture from the same room:

DSC01646

The guys are RLC and Meade (my 2 husbands).

(And here's my old blog post about 12 Bones. We need to do a summer drive that takes us back down that way again. I'd like to spend a few days in Asheville and eat every meal at 12 Bones.)

Obama is one scrawny dude. Is that Michelle at the same table?

Yes, look at that picture of the Obamas. Michelle Obama allows herself to be photographed making the funniest faces. I'm thinking about making a collection of these funny photos -

Yes, she dresses well (most of the time), but the poor woman has no personal grace.

I wonder what they ordered. Ribs? How many ribs do you think Barack ate? Two?

For one who harangues the hell out of us (and our children) about healthy eating, she sure does seem to turn up in pictures with burgers and now ribs.

I wonder if the FDA checked the salt level before they chowed down, or is that just for the rest of us?

'allows herself to be photographed' ?

really ? photographers snapping away when you do *anything* is allowing yourself to be photographed.

you're right Lily, maybe she should go for the stepford wife approach and just always smile and never speak. yes, that's the plan. never any unflattering photos.

and 'the poor woman has no personal graces' ?!? please. i cant imagine what has put that ridiculous idea in your head, unless of course your a sit down and shut up kinda gal.

You know Danielle, she doesn't have to make funny faces when people are standing around with cameras. Most public people don't.

With his hands tucked under his "desk," the President looks like an anxious schoolboy. It's somewhat endearing because it's such a departure from most images of him.

I wonder whether 12 Bones sauce meets the newly proposed FDA guidelines for salt? Did POTUS and FLOTUS check this out before dining there?

That kid in the 12 Bones picnic table photo from July 2009 appears to wearing a "Super Obama" t-shit, depicting Obama tearing off a business suit to reveal his super hero "O" costume.

Wince said...

I really did mean to write "shirt."

AllenS said...

t-shit

Too funny.

ha ha... EDH, go HERE for a closer look at James's... shirt.

I hope they threw out the guy with the T-shirt that said, "Tender butts and sweet backs", who was sitting behind your harem before FCOTUS walked in.

Do it, do it. The Blonde and I are always talking about reliving our jaunt from Bryn Mawr to Sarasota during Memorial Day weekend in '95.
It will make you all starry-eyed again.

I think she's trying to look like she's having fun. I hope she is. Much like Timothy Geithner (they seem to have the same scowl on their faces most of the time), I don't think life is a barrel of laughs for her. Being mad at the world takes a lot out of you

Like Lurch in the cheesesteak place in South Philly in '04, I don't think The Zero enjoys venues where the hoi polloi gather. If the only mustard they have is yellow, he isn't comfortable. It's tough being a snob.

Wasn't "My Two Husband's" a sitcom from the eighties with a monkey?

Or am I mixing up two show?

The chances of you marrying two men named Law(u)rence must be even higher than the chance that John Kerry would marry two rich heiresses from Pennsylvania.

I'm glad they agree on good food.

If you do drive down that way, spend some time on the Blue Ridge Parkway, especially when the rhododendrons are blooming.

A few weeks ago, we took a weekend trip to hit Texas Monthly's top three Texas BBQ joints. Two on Friday, one for lunch and one for dinner, and one on Saturday.

The Saturday venue was the No. 1 place in Texas, Snows BBQ in Lexington, a town of about 2200 located 50 miles northeast of Austin.

It's only open on Saturdays, from 8:00 AM until the meat is gone (which they told us had lately been around 10:30 AM)

We arrived at 7:30 AM as others started to show up, and by 8:00 a small line had formed. When they oppened, many were taking theirs to go - we heard Dallas and other points in Texas.

But there we were, at 8:15 in the morning, in a full one unit trailer size dining room with 20-25 people chowing down on BBQ.

And I am happy to report, that it was everything that had been reported, and fully deserved its number 1 ranking.

I should add, we didn't fly down on a 747.

Ha. And actually my father's name was Richard, so it's very odd that my 1st husband's name was Richard Lawrence (Cohen) and my 2d husband's name is Laurence. Is that inbred in some dangerous way?

Ann--
HA! Have you noticed how few little Richards there are these days? William and Alexander (two big names in my family) have made a comeback, but no Richards under the age of 30.

I was in China 2 years ago on a tour with a group of college students. After several days with the guides, we were on pretty friendly terms with each other, and they started to talk about one of their previous groups. They said this in a very low, secretive tone, "There was a man in that group..." (here they got really quiet, and glanced at each other, "they called him, 'Dick.'" "Yes," I said, "His real name is Richard." "No, no!" they said, "His name was really Dick!" Then I explained rhyming English nicknames, but I don't think they really believed me.

His publicity flacks are saying he and Michelle are taking a "middle class vacation." Probably Obama is scratching his nuts because he thinks that is middle class.

A "middle class vacation" at the Grove Park Inn. Ha.

I don't blame Michelle for the funny look on her face. She's being used as a prop. Has been for some time.

The Crack Emcee said...

"My two husbands."

Considering the speaker - and the meaning of the word "husband" (master of the house) - that sentence makes no sense.

Michelle has not learned the poker face trick. Probably never will. She has an expressive face. There are some great photos of her at that link too.

Looking back over photos from the past year and half, though, she probably should lay off the ribs.

Quayle: I wish you wouldn't refer to smoked dead cow meat as BBQ. BBQ is pork. I happen to like Texas style smoked dead cow meat, but it is not, repeat not, BBQ.

All the best.

@Lily, Danielle, and David--

Michelle Obama has some of that quality for setting certain people off just by showing up and saying something-- a trait she shares with Sarah Palin. She (MB) has a quality that I think there is a word for, but, like Mama in "Throw Mama from the Train," I can't put my finger on it. Coltish? Gangly? Awkward? None of them quite works, but a little bit of each. She's almost 5'11" and has some of that, "What do I do with all this height?" look that comes across in some photos, whereas in others she looks great.

I read somewhere that French people think American women look stupid because they smile so much. I notice some of that in Sarah Palin's way of talking in an interview--kind of smiley and shiny, even when the topic is serious. She didn't have that demeanor in a video of her sportscasting when she was younger. I wonder if she thinks she has to try to stay pleasant all the time. I think she is more interesting at times she has been forceful without the pleasant espression.

Anyway, Michelle Obama, Sarah Palin, both get criticized just for showing up and saying something. Joe Biden gets a pass with his comparatively huge vault of ridiculous statements, as well as his overly processed appearance. I don't know why these two women set off so much emotion. They are public figures, sure, but both come in for special scrutiny that exceeds understanding.

I have noticed in Oval Office photographs that the president looks too small for the desk, or that he has the seat set too low. He looks like a kid who needs a booster seat or a Sears catalog to sit on.

Oh dear, oh dear. Another WV that I just cannot pass up: gasbed.

(Snort!)

There was an episode of All in the Family where Archie explained to Michael why having the covers of the bed loose was better than having them tight, because it allowed for the easy removal of fumes, which he demonstrated.

Indeed. And tomato should NOT be evident. Good luck finding true Carolina barbeque west of Lexington.

A friend of mine just got back from Asheville and said it was lovely.

He went to Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and said they were all crap but that Asheville is very pretty.

A little too white though and hippy.

I came through Asheville on Friday on I-26 from Kingsport, TN, about the time they were at 12 Bones, and traffic was backed up for miles. It was also backed up coming into Asheville from the south on I-26 and traffic going into downtown on Merrimon Ave was bumper-to-bumper. Now I know why, they probably had some of the main streets in the area closed for security reasons.

To call a vacation at The Grove Park Inn "middle class" is laughable. Middle class people can't afford it.

And Professor Althouse, if you decide to go to Asheville again, if you come down I-26 be sure to stop in Kingsport to see your nephew if he is not off playing golf somewhere. We have a 12 Bones also, though now it is called Bonefire Smokehouse. It was originally an off-shoot started by one of the guys who helped start the Asheville place. He later moved to Kingsport. He has been working on revitalizing our downtown like he did Asheville's. He changed the name when they agreed to go their separate ways. Ours has live music on Thu/Fri/Sat nights in the summer. Based on the pictures I saw here, ours also has a lot more character, it is located in some rustic old buildings in the historic part of downtown. And the food is just as good.

All the truly beautiful people, the ones who never look awkward in photographs, whose features are without imperfection, could have some understanding and be a little kinder to those who are less fortunate. How lucky you are to be so blessed; why be cruel about those who are less fortunately endowed than you?
