Santorum is surging.

It's the meme of the day. I'm just noting. I feel sorry for all the journalists assigned to the 2012 campaign who've got so little to write about now and in the next few months. They need to act like something is happening, and after the Perry, Cain, Gingrich, and Paul surges, it must be time for a Santorum surge. And there's nothing else to talk about today.

It's only a slow news day . . . week . . . year when the important events of the day are things that you really don't want to cover. Move along. Move along.

Iowa Voters/Media as Romeo.

Who will be their Juliet?

I would have thought one of Bachmann's staff going over to another campaign would be bigger news. Sounds like a death knell, but then it sounded likewise when half of Newt's staff heaved-ho a couple months back.

If the Perry and Bachmann voters would peel off and get behind Santorum he'd be in the lead. And why shouldn't they? He's the conservative other conservatives can get behind to stop the fiasco of a Progressive Romney versus Progressive Obama campaign.

If you need a little more info on Santorum, just google it!

Its funny how these caucuses are being pumped up as being important by the media.

Most everybody forgets that Mike Huckabee won the 08 Iowa GOP caucus and then promptly dropped out 2 months later after bombing on Super Tuesday. Meanwhile, John McCain finished an un-threatening fourth.

This campaign begins with the NH, SC and FL primaries.

Yawn.

But is Santorum really a Conservative?

Opinions differ. Certainly he's an (pleonasm alert!) opportunistic politician.

There must be some candidate less appealing to me than Santorum, but I can't bring one to mind at the moment. Give me just a decade or two...

Mitt- Obama. It is already written . Only the partner remain unknown. Will OBama drop Biden for Hillary? Balancing the ticket: Rubio or Martinez or Hayley? Christie would be the best option anyway

Somewhere, this blog post's title is being leaked back to Dan Savage, who is having a private laugh at the Senator's expense.

Why the hell can't Iowans make up their minds? It's almost like they know that swinging support behind the flavor of the month candidate will result in more spending and attention to their state. Thank God the caucus will be over in less than a week; some of us would like the nomination wrapped up by Florida.

Too Catholic. The only Catholics that liberals will vote for are the ones that cheat on their wives with Russian spies and unstable movie stars. Oh, and the ones that commit vehicular homicide and then try to cover it up.

Garage - yeah, that Dan Savage sure is funny. Remember when he went around licking doorknobs during the 2000 election in an effort to spread illness on the Gary Bauer campaign for whom he was fake-volunteering? HIGH-larious.

I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more Santorum.

Nice try. GM. Maybe TItus can provide us with a direct link.

If people who really can't stand Romney want to, you know, beat Obama, they should give Rick Perry another look.

He has a record of accomplishment (unlike Santorum). He has won a statewide office (unlike Gingrich). He has executive experience (unlike Bachmann, Paul, Santorum, or Gingrich). He has money and organization (unlike Bachmann, Gingrich or Santorum). His views are mainstream conservative (unlike Paul).

Yes, his debate performance was lousy, but that can be improved upon. Nothing is going to give Gingrich or Santorum executive experience or make Ron Paul stop being a nut.

Anti-Romneyites, hear me. Perry is your best hope.

Not so much a Santorum surge as a Newt swoon.

MadisonMan said...

But is Santorum really a Conservative?

Not really. He made a Fulbright-style deal with voters in PA which allowed him to be a very big spender until the '06 campaign when Bobby Casey finally called him on it.

PS OTOH, anybody Dan Savage hates that much must have something worthwhile going for him.

I just never could see what it was.

PPS What Writ said.

In one respect I think the fact that none if the GOP candidates is inspiring the base is because conservative voters tend to be more critical of their candidates. Liberals prefer boy-band type candidates like Obama who make girls swoon and men tingley but after a few years lose their luster once they realize Obama he sounds as trite as the next guy.

The word you seek, Hoosier, is sociopath.

WV "herspan" A nice way of saying broad in the beam.

I stopped reading Dan Savage over the Santorum thing, and I didn't even like Santorum then.

I agree with Writ Small. I'm for Romney, but the only possible challenger I see is Perry.

Rassmussen has Obama dipping into the 30's for the first time since they started charting it against a named or generic GOP candidate. Romney is 45 to Obama's 39. While that looks impressive, they've been going back and forth for months, although this is the widest margin so far.

=====================
It will be only 4 years since the Epic Fail of Texan G Dubya Bush on the economy, reckless spending, crony capitalism, lax Border control plus hands off on illegals, and the eternal Neocon wars of adventure and nation-building.

To be even remotely appealing, you have to convince voters that you are different, and will not be another Texan LBJ or Dubya. Perry convincingly shows he is no LBJ, but unfortunately comes across as a dumber Dubya.

However, he will likely take some Deep South states, assuming Newt collapses further. The Fundies will win a few states for a non-Romney. Or it could be Santorum they prefer against the Heretic.

Bachmann is wearing thin. Like Newt, Palin..the more voters truly see her..the lower their regard. "I am the greatest 2-term Congresswoman ever - forged in the crucible of junior backbenchers!" Yah, sure, Michelle!

These Iowans are a tough bunch...

The media does indeed need something to be happening: they need Obama to weaken & the GOP to rise so 2012 can be a horserace. Tight race = dramawhoring/narrative-spinning/human-interest-hokum jackpot = serious $$$$$.

Sadly, no compliance is forthcoming from the GOP (though being the helpful sort of fellow that he is, Obama gamely carries on royally pissing liberals off like a real trooper) ... & worst of all, the economy is slowly but surely picking up steam.

Conventional wisdom says Obama's doomed in 2012. It was saying this about him in 2007-2008 as well. As of today Intrade rates him just over 51% for re-election, & his real hardcore campaign hasn't even begun yet (his last one won a national advertising award, with very good reason).

What if in 2012 America cycles itself farther & farther out of the poorhouse while Republican nominees carry on displaying their respective wares in the same, er, very unique way they've done thus far? THAT nightmare scenario could put Obama into 1984 blowout territory, which would slaughter the market value of FOX/CNN/CBS & Co. - the poor schmucks, stuck with all those hundreds of hours of talking-hairdo ratings cyanide & nowhere to go but down.

PS: Note that the party of hippy-dippy free-lovin' wild-thangitude chose its last nominee via a quite orderly, civil (if not downright dry & prim), wide-ranging contest between exactly two choices ... while the party of discipline, dignity, consistency, & personal resposibility is now choosing their next one via a chaotic circus of Musical Chairs being played using an endless marathon of debates that almost always have the exact same narrow range of topics being bloviated upon between the "X" candidates (let X = however many people are running this week).
