"There may well come a day, when women will be invited to join our membership..."

I am sorry they did. I think it is perfectly legitimate for them to exclude whoever they want. It is a private club. Too bad they gave in to PC crap.

And there shall be no place free of female encroachment
And there shall be no place left where the evil patriarchy holds sway
And there shall be no place left where quiet is only broken by the sound of club hitting ball
But everywhere shall be nonstop idiot chattering
When VICTORY is hers!

Nothing says fuck you like telling the hand-wringing, nervous nellies of life and government that you are going to do something your way, when you want to, where you want to, without their influence. It's a 'I built this, not you' statement. Good for Augusta I say. They will be better for it.

To bad the homosexual marriage can't understand this basic fact that people or groups of people come to their own conclusions in their own time and that even if they reject you or your ideas that you move along to fathom better ones to convince them with.

Free association is out the window. Has been. A men's club I belong to succumbed a number of years ago and at great expense built women's locker rooms and bath rooms. Women were under the impression that men do business at men's clubs. They do not. They relax. They read. They eat. They drink. They work out. They play squash. When the women figured this out they more or less lost interest. Oh, a few come around and they are welcome but it is not the same. For us or for them. It will be the same at Augusta. They have admitted two very accomplished women but it will no longer be a place for men.

Agree with Ipso, but Methedras is also right.

At least they did it their way.

The NY Times piece comments were almost all political. I was going to add a comment asking how many of the commenters wanted to post their handicap but I had forgotten my login.

Why would anyone care whet the NY Times thinks ?

I just wish I could afford Augusta. I wish I could still play golf, on fact.

Last handicap 9. When I was 15, it was scratch. My father (typical Irish father) wanted me to turn pro instead of college. Of course, I paid no attention. Golf pros when I was 18 were selling men's clothing in golf shops.

I should add that Bobby Jones, who designed Augusta, never turned pro. He was always an amateur. Wonderful swing. There are movies from the 30s showing him play./

This is at least the second private club in the South she's been invited to join. An earlier one, in a nearby state, but in a more out of the spotlight city, invited her despite being a single woman. They do invite single women on occasion under certain circumstances (important family, widow of), but what was notable was that she was the first black member that I can think of who was invited to join. Not that I keep tabs to know for absolute certain.

Women golfers are serious about the game too.

Jones and Roberts started the Invitation only tournament now called the Masters in 1934 at the height of the depression.

At that time men's clubs were normal. The Women were not the educated ones then, when only 8% of the men went to college and few professions admitted women at all.

Today that has been reversed as proved by Rice, a President of Stanford University, a Presbyterian raised former Secretary of State being named a member.

Who cares if she is a woman golfer who doesn't know how to cuss except for what Bush and Cheney managed to initiate her into?

Fuck you, New York Times.

...but they should have invited Sarah Palin.

Think of the rage.

Well this thread proves to me that the Althouse blog was all it was cracked up to be - emphasis on cracked.

On which day of the week do the real threads post up and the triple digit IQs show up to comment?

Lindsey,

And this comment, and your smoking, club-fingered avatar demonstrate your own quality, how?

As one of the Althouse "cracked" commenters I really am sorry I offended you Lindsey and as penance I am going to spend the rest of the day reading Cosmo.......By the way if you wanted to invest millions or 50 bucks and start a private club and exclude me--I would stand by your right to do so.

Augusta has the right to invite whomever they wish as members; I have always thought so. That said, at some point, some woman was going to be more worthy of invitation than some man. (I am assuming that the criteria is education, accomplishment and shining the light of success on the Club.) Yesterday they found two, and good for them.

Augusta is not expensive. The Masters covers all their costs. Money is not the barrier...it's invite only.

I don't see this in your future.

You knew this was coming: Now the lefties are critical of the Condi (who is an avid golfer) pick--saying zero-jubstantative accomplishment jumped-up affirmative action Queen Michelle Baby should have been nominated instead..

Meh - I'm an avid golfer but what a private club that I'll never, ever (ever) get to play, let alone belong to does is of little interest to me. But as a grad of University of South Carolina I say good for Darla Moore.
