At Blue's Café...

... nobody has the blues and we think it's nice if your eyes don't match.

Take it from me, she's a better catch."

Why I ended up - literally - avoiding TV news and talk shows.

From a recent Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel story: "The [group of 20] whales seen Friday are the known survivors of a pod that ended up trapped in a labyrinth of sandbars, channels and shallows near Highland Beach in Everglades National Park."

Why "ended up?" Why not "became" or "was?" Why not "ended down" or just "ended?"

On close examination the sentence is correct. The pod did "end up" trapped; it broke apart and ceased to exist as a unit. The group of 20 had exited the labyrinth and survived.

However most usaginations (Ha! You thought I would go for "usages". No, normally I would say "uses;" but why use a four letter word when one of 12 letters can be found or imagined?) of the phrase "ended up," heard on TV conversations or (lamentably) encountered in reading are prime examples of what our High School teachers used to call "dead-wood."

Shamefully, I almost Googled. Didn't forget, just don't recallat the moment. Will blurt out next line at socially inappropriate time, nodding head and quietly laughing with satisfaction.

I didn't look it up.

I have certain Dylan albums imprinted, from 40 years ago.

"I Shall Be Free" is certainly on one of them.

Ask Meade how often I say "I'm going to grow my hair down to my feet so strange, 'til I look like a walking mountain range."

It's the normal discourse around here!
