That's how our front walk looks right now.

I live on a cul de sac and the town replaced the sewer lines a few years ago. Like being trapped.

Know what you're going through..

You might be able to find nicer curbstones, but you will have the most expensive curbstones.

It's mechanized green-coated gleaners.

Maybe they'll find the lost Althouse archives.

Mayor: New sculptor will fix village's 'Scary Lucy' statue

The Edward Snowden sculpture was better than the Lucy sculpture by far!

Is the metal brace like thing in the foreground, situated over the trench, meant to protect from a cave in of the soil?

There was a power outage in Turkey last week, everywhere but the part that is supplied by Iran.

And a power outage in DC today.

Interesting or coincidence?

Yes, it's called a trench box and OSHA requires it to be used on trenches deeper than 4-ft.

Your Husband,

Thanks! There are some huge ones sitting next to a major road in Houston right now. I had no idea what they were for. The picture Althouse took gives one a better idea of what they're used for.

I saw that Matt. That was heinous.

We could get quite a lot of rain here in the next couple days, so you might have an awesome puddle.

Looks like the secret cables are going straight into Chez Meadehouse from the street. They'll need the newest fiber optic ones to handle all the traffic and traffic snooping during the upcoming elections. Opinions are suede at Meadehouse and they'll need smoothing by Big Brother.

Aren't you paranoid?

chickelit said...

Or maybe they're installing secret underground chemical injectors for the fresh water coming in. You and Meade may need to watch the purity of your precious aqueous fluids.

"dig deep"

That's code for the Walker secret Pipeline.

I still think it is sanitary sewer main replacement, and they are also replacing the services back to the P/L, after which they are your problem.

The big metal thing is known as a trench box, and yes, it's intended to keep the sides of the trench from caving in.

This being a cafe: There finally is what appear to be a clear case of "white police officer shoots and kills an unarmed black man."

Now watch the media play this back to mean that all the previously reported cases that turned out not to be so, actually was so after all.
This video from South Carolina proves it!

On occasion, I get a little down, not quite happy with my life. sometimes, it's worse that others. Even when things are at their worst, though, I always have this thought:

No matter how bad things get, I will always have something better to do than create a fake ID on the internet. And if the time ever comes that I do not, well, maybe that would be the time to cash in my chips.

Patrick, I so love when a fan of mine steps up to the plate and hits one out of the park like you have. I love you so much.

From the American Physical Society statement on climate change:

increased warming of the global climate system is more certain than ever. Nevertheless, as recognized by Working Group 1 of the IPCC, scientific challenges remain to our abilities to observe, interpret, and project climate changes.

So they can't really observe it, can't really interpret it, and certainly can't project it, but they get more certain about it every day!

Science sure has changed since I went to college.

At least you have an office. That looks rather grim. It will, I'm sure, be nice when it's done.

Ann Althouse said...

It's not grim.

The pipes need whatever maintenance is due. The curbs have been crumbling for decades and clearly needed replacing, and the people doing the work are extremely respectful to our interests in safety and access. The noise is restricted to the hours of 7 am and 7 pm and they work hard during that time and close up all the holes before they leave. I have absolutely no complaints about these workers. They also communicate with us well and are notably friendly.

They did that to my street when my oldest son was 3. It was like a different playground every day for an entire summer. He spent a lot of time worth the Tonka trucks and climbing on real ones. The street looked pretty good at the end.

I was just watching a movie called Delicacy in which a young woman gets over the death of a husband she loved very much. Her last words to him were "You look ridiculous in those shorts."

His last words to her were "I was the European Calves Champion," before he set out on his fateful run.

House Property taxes in Chicago are about $20,000 and the city is nearly bankrupt. No funds for fixing leaky pipes. But wait, there might be a city casino on the way.

For the sanitary sewer, I think it is more about additional capacity than repair. VCP does not "go bad," and the diameter of the main they are laying is substantially larger than what they took out.
Some folks back east connect their downspouts to their sanitary services and that causes overflow problems when it rains.
Or some new development is happening upstream, and a new interceptor is needed.
