"Sakai is now part of the Virgin Academia program and goes to life drawing classes, sketching naked women..."

"... as he begins to understand the female body and what he could aim for in the future."
"The first time I did this, in autumn last year, oh . . . I was so amazed. Their bodies are incredibly beautiful. There is no need to be so pessimistic... After all, being a virgin isn't fatal."

I'd heard that the Japanese can really tie one on, but I didn't know it was possible to build up that kind of a tolerance.

I didn't make it through The 40 Year Old Virgin. It was the same joke over and over. So it's partly viewed, on the shelf.

Carell's _Get Smart_ and _Dinner for Schmucks_ were good.

rhhardin, skip to the end. The closing scenes are fantastic.

I think boring the viewer so much that he leaves is a dramatic flaw even if the end is good, though.

Maybe I can find it in the huge pile.

You are all missing the point. Naked women that you are REQUIRED to stare at openly! This is the best argument I have ever heard for Federally mandated FREE (Free, free) tuition. Back to school for me.

One in four Japanese men in their thirties have never had sex

Pardon my ignorance of Japanese culture, but I thought the geisha girls were supposed to attend to these situations.

Speaking of life drawing. In high school I went to school known for art and did a lot of life drawing.
One time we had this guy come on and stand there naked the whole time. About half way thought the class he penis started dripping. And In not talking urine. It was dripping long strands of clear liquid that dripped down to his knees in one long strand before breaking off. To be followed by the next strand. It was repulsive but also hilarious at the same time. afterward he had admitted to the teacher (from what I heard) that he had masturbdted before the class so that he wouldn't get erections while standing there . So that must have been post cum. At least I hope that's what it was.
My drawings all included the drip for realists sake.
Why bring up the story? Because hiw often do you watch a guys penis drip in art clas? Or frankly ever?

Obviously Japan needs more mercy fucking.

We may have gone too far taking away their comfort women. But this is the kind of crap that happens when you lose a war. Lowers the testosterone for generations. Maybe the day Japanese is only spoken in Hell is not that far off.

The article says that: "Such a problem is not one for Sakai to bear alone: a 2010 survey by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research found that a quarter of Japanese men in their thirties were virgins, a rise of three per cent from a 1992 poll."

Joking aside, this is a problem. It means that the normal, healthy interaction between girls and boys, and young women and men, ain't happening 'til very late in the game. It probably also means their reproduction rates are pretty low.

What's the cause of this highly arrested development?

The Japanese birthrate is crashing. Has been for some time. The economic problems caused by old people out numbering their replacements are looming. There is no solution. It's nearly too late to screw their way out of the situation and, in any case, no indication that their interest in reproducing is growing. They're tearing down schools already. There are plenty of Chinese and they're waiting. So far.

It seems like Japan is going through a massive case of MGTOW.

When I saw "Virgin Academia program," I thought, "What is Sir Richard up to now?"

@jr565 -- I never saw what you saw, but there was one male model in my MFA program who was notorious. He would scan the room for the prettiest co-ed, then assume a spread-leg pose in her direction. The guy was about 60. It was my job as instructor to make him switch poses until he got confused, and then tell him to freeze.

The theatrical cut of 40 Year Old Virgin was good. The cut they put on DVD and BluRay is horrible; turned it into a long and boring movie.

There are a few interlocking issues here that are hard for a westerner to appreciate.

One is that a considerable number of marriages (something like one in three) in Japan are still from "omiai". This tradition is essentially 'arranged dating', where both sets of parents will meet, and engage in a series of 6-person dates that may or may not end with a marriage. Recently, there has been a bit of a generational disconnect where the parents no longer feel this is their responsibility... but may not have communicated this clearly to their progeny. This is compounded with the second major factor.

In Japan... the working hours for 'career-level' work are brutal. They utterly destroy any semblance of a personal life. My employer's HR department recently sent out an email saying that "If you're working over 68 hours per week, please let us know so that we can be in compliance with overtime reporting laws." If you're working less than 60/wk, you _will_ be passed up for important roles/promotions. Combine that with fairly rediculous average commute times, and a distinct lack of women you can date in most professional workplaces, and you have a major time-availability issue. Professional offices are overwhelmingly male, here.

Japan also has a significant gender gap problem. There are far more available men/boys than women/girls. This has twisted the teenaged and college dating scene to where a moderately attractive girl now expects to have 2-3 "boy friends" at all times, one of whom is getting laid if he is lucky. (note that neither party considers this dating to have any kind of connection to marriage in any way) As a result, when she graduates from college, she doesn't tend to find adequate the "hey we can see each other on weekends mostly"-level dating that starting white-collar guys have time for. A cultural tradition of late marriage (late 20s to early 30s) means most college students couldn't imagine getting married as they graduate, as is somewhat common in the US.

Yet another issue is that Japanese marriage archetypes are stuck at the same level as the modern stereotypes of 1950s marriages in the US. There are a few Japan-unique variances (women almost universally control the family finances), but this is a culture that had "everyone in the extended family and all their belongings are the property of the patriarch" enshrined in law within living memory.
