Beware the hair tourniquet.

"Scott Walker said his daughter, Molly, was cranky, screaming and began to overheat, so his wife took off her socks. That’s when they saw a hair wrapped tightly around her toe...."

That's Scott Walker, some man in Kansas, not the Wisconsin governor. But governors and nongovernors alike are warned to be on guard for stray hairs inside socks that can get wrapped around a baby's toe and tightened into something gruesome.

Yes, that happened to my brother's baby boy.

this can't be common. you can easily snag threads on little toes/fingers when pulling things on, but you'll probably notice. good heuristic though: tried everything else? bathe+inspect.

My daughter's pediatrician warned of this over 18 years ago. Said if she was ever crying for no apparent reason to check her feet for a hair around a toe. Guess he was ahead of his time.

This is a first for me. (Yes, I have had several kids.)

Bugs the crap out of me when an article that is obviously about a visual topic fails to include visuals. Since it is obviously silly journalistic scare-mongering, wouldn't it have been more effective with a picture?

"Beware the hair tourniquet." Common occurrence in the late sixties, early seventies. Many a day after glow was extinguished with the possible diagnosis of crabs, only on further examination to be a hippy girl's long hair wrapped around one's junk. Common sunday morning occurrence at the frat house.

I learned early on with my first child that stripping him nekkid and starting over from baby powder in the buttcrack could soothe many unknown issues. Onesie fabric bunched up? finger caught in buttonhole? Toes scrunched in footies? Who could tell? But stating over from a bare bottom to fully clothed worked wonders.

Of course, had the habit continued much past college he would have had some issues to deal with, but fortunately the crowd he ran with was cool with it.

Fun fact: a human hair is as strong as a copper wire of the same thickness.
