Who's afraid of Kid Rock?

Apparently, people are finding this very powerful:

I like that his issue is clear speech. That's one of my long-term issues (and one of my favorite tags). There's something poignant in the thought that all we really want is to understand what the hell is going on.

Last 6 words of the previous sentence brought to you by Mr. Clear Speech, Donald Trump...

Part of the problem with healthcare reform is that no one can understand the topic, which is frustrating as hell. If a Kid Rock platform for simplicity ran in every state, the Congress itself would be repealed and replaced.

Best thing is that if he chooses to use a Kid Rock song in his campaign, there won't be any liberal musicians whining about it and asking him to cease and desist.

No matter how "unconventional" he is, he's better than Debbie Stabenow.

No, Ralph. He doesn't trust the government to do that for every other citizen. So Ralph. Perhaps he really wants to run to serve his country rather than enrich himself.

Debbie Stabenow won in 2012, 59-38%. While I am hesitant to call any campaign a joke (considering the current president), Kid Rock is no Donald Trump.

There is no need to fear Kid Rock, but of course we can't ignore him either.

Rusty, my point is that the other suddenly rich celebrities don't seem to care what government does to them.

So I go in the 711 the other day and the young man in front or me has his McDonald's employee shirt on and is buying cigarettes. When he leaves, I comment to the store owner that jeez he spends $8 for cigarettes on a McDonald's paycheck? The store owner says yeah but he gets $600 per month for some type of disability plus food stamps of $300 or so plus a housing voucher. My point is the average taxpayer is not aware of how their taxes are spent. That is an example of what Robert Rickey would like cleared up.

Compare Chief Justice John Marshall in McCulloch v. Maryland:

"A Constitution, to contain an accurate detail of all the subdivisions of which its great powers will admit, and of all the means by which they may be carried into execution, would partake of the prolixity of a legal code, and could scarcely be embraced by the human mind. It would probably never be understood by the public. Its nature, therefore, requires that only its great outlines should be marked, its important objects designated, and the minor ingredients which compose those objects be deduced from the nature of the objects themselves."

He's no Donald Trump in the sense that he just seems to be a bit of an asshole rather than a personality disordered malignancy, but If Kid Rock runs, and I think he will - you probably don't do an interview with Dan Rather because you're looking to sell records - I expect many democrats will vote for him. Anybody who in one way or another helps keep expectations of him low is helping him along because the lower they are, the greater the speed with which he will blow past them. The man has a gazillion dollars and lives in a decked out double wide trailer on a hill near Nashville. There is a certain deliberateness in that that suggests an underlying depth and realness that I think will translate to people. Other aspects of the arc of his life will do so as well. If he runs as Guy Richie, there will likely be a British film director who will be unhappy.
The law is that he will need to run under his legal name, which is Robert Ritchie.

And since Detroit votes about 97% Democrat (and you will rightly think that is hyperbole, but it isn't), I don't know how many would vote in a Republican primary. Or, if they did vote, how many would vote for Rob Ritchie over the African-American Bob Young.

In the Republican suburbs of Birmingham, Grosse Pointe, Troy and East Grand Rapids, I don't know how many will vote for a pro-choice and pro-Obergefell candidate.

Bullshit. The original concept was : "if we didn't include it, the federal government can't do it" not "here's a basic outline, we'll fill in the details later".

It would probably never be understood by the public. Its nature, therefore, requires that only its great outlines should be marked, its important objects designated, and the minor ingredients which compose those objects be deduced from the nature of the objects themselves."

This is only to be expected by the man who committed one of the greatest con jobs in history when he created the power of judicial review for the Supreme Court. He was the original judicial activist.

I don't think that she has many million-dollar offers awaiting her if she retires. But she might.

In three terms in the Senate, she's done almost nothing of consequence. She was the Chair of the Agriculture Committee, when a major agriculture bill was passed but she was a figurehead in those negotiations.

Sex Tape

Rock's unlikely friendship with US singer Stapp took an unfortunate turn due to a bizarre series of events in 1999. While the sex tape itself never emerged – Rock said he "paid the money to quash it through attorneys and things" – knowledge of it became public in 2006.

Rock's telling of the story is that while he was touring with Metallica, he was visited by a groupie in his trailer. "There’s a knock at the door and it’s Scott Stapp with a video camera. He’s like: 'What’s going on here?' And I’m like: 'Whaddya mean, what’s going on here?'

"I was just trying to be a friend to him. He just seemed a little lost. I think I said to him: 'What’s with the camera?' And you just know that thing’s coming out one day. The thing is, if it did – and it almost did – I’d be a f------ hero; it would ruin his career.'

Chief Justice Roberts:
"If you are among the many Americans—of whatever sexual orientation—who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it."

The whys and the wherefores are lesser known on this one, but Rock brought it up in 2015 while describing his political views: "As an ordained minister I don’t look forward to marrying gay people, but I’m not opposed to it."

In a similarly unusual take on right-wing politics, Rock also believes in the legalization of drugs: "they should legalize and tax everything: pot, cocaine, heroin. Has it not been proven that people will always find a way to get what they want?"

One fairly unique thing about Richie is that he's had long, immersive experiences ranging over the entire breadth of the 99%. He was born and raised middle/upper middle class and then took a deliberate hard turn and spent years honing himself in the underbelly of Detroit with its very different socioeconomic ethos. Over time he found a great deal of wealth, and the necessary concerns of a rich man. I think all that combines to produce an ability to understand and empathize with the needs and concerns of an awful lot of people that can't be learned in the same way from the outside of any of those experiences, and to be a uniquely credentialed bullshit detector across that same board. If I were to asked to make a principled argument (as far as that is possible for a guy who leans right - ha ha!) for a Kid Rock candidacy, I think it would be based on those things.

Birkel said...

@Gahrie, all too true. I got a desperate fundraising letter from my Congresswoman, Barbara Comstock (R), pleading for donations because the Democrats have targeted her district in 2018. But what has she done? The only vote she has taken where a Democrat would have voted differently was for Paul Ryan as Speaker. If you can't get agreement on how to replace Obamacare then just kill it. For the vast majority of voters Obamacare has meant paying more money for worse healthcare coverage. That's the simple truth. They can fix taxes too, while they're at it.

Really, it's up to those of us who are Republican voters in Republican-held districts to contact our Congress critters and let them know that the status quo is not acceptable. Living in the Washington bubble as they do, perhaps our Congress critters have forgotten that you win with voters casting votes. Not with dollars raised or favorable mentions in the Washington Post, but with people who care enough about their candidacy to drive a mile to the polls on Election Day and cast a ballot for them.

Idea's crazy enough it might just work.

I want regulatory and spending decreases. The rest of my platform is "get out of my way".

I'm sure it looks nuts on paper, but listening, it's fine. Easy to understand... as long as you don't listen through a filter of hate.

It looks nuts, and it sounds nuts. Worst of all, reading it or hearing it, it comes off as crazy/stupid/illegal in a U.S. District Court.

The cause of greater immigration scrutiny was actually set back, by Trump's irresponsible, incomprehensible verbiage on "a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States..." No one was ever going to enact such a thing. Not in a federal statute; not in the Code of Federal Regulations, not in an Executive Order. The Trump Administration knew better, than to even try. So they tried something else. Something that might stoke the fires of the base, and give off an appearance of a Trump immigration victory.

I offer no opinion on whether the many district court T.R.O.'s were proper. My only opinion is that Trump's terrible, reckless, imprecise, insupportable language was a huge problem. For his base, it was a false promise. For his enemies, it was catnip. For U.S. District Court judges, it was an issue.

2) Sen. Rock (MI) will annoy you every time you read it

Well I mean, why would you? I mean it's not like they are cases of activists judges unconstitutionally interfering with a Republican President's right to manage the Executive branch.

AllenS is essentially correct: Kid Rock is not a politician.

From Orrin Hatch and John "Maverick" McCain, who are still lurking about after swearing that they'd never hang around into their 80's--no sir, not them!--through Nancy Pelosi et al who have enriched themselves from the information she gleans in legislative sessions and hearings, to Bill and Hillary Clinton, who sold access through the State Department for personal gain and glory, the self-anointed, permanent, professional political class has reveled in their incompetence and corruption. That talent is matched by their success in systematically dismantling the rule of law.

The current Governor of Virginia is Terry McAuliffe, former Democrat bagman. The Republican candidate for Governor of Virginia is Ed Gillespie, former Republican bagman. They are both well-schooled in the game of politics, but that says nothing about their ability to govern. So sure, what the hell. Kid Rock for US Senate. I can't shed any tears that the political class, and the media that feeds it and off of it, are taking in the teeth. They invited the abuse. It would be unfair of the not to accept it.

John Oliver said the other day that Trump talks like a Speak-and-Spell that just fell in the toilet. Cracked me right up then, and cracks me up again just now writing it. An awesomely literal LOL.

God, what dumb asses on this page.

My opinion on the Trump "refugee ban" cases is this; I'd be most comfortable seeing Trump's administration win. It is an area of the law where good clear management responsibility rightly rests with the Executive. And I hate seeing federal district courts become micro-managers of immigration policy. In a nation where we've seen far too much power taken out of the Legislative branch and too much invested in the Executive (and FAR too much in the Article III courts), immigration is an exception.

Okay?

Now if I was a DoJ lawyer tasked with defending the Trump EO's in federal court, my first email would be to the Attorney General and the White House counsel: "Please tell the President that he has screwed things up for us, with his Tweets and his stray comments, in addition to that campaign announcement. We'll do our best, but things will go more smoothly if you get the President to shut up on this issue."

Yancey Ward said...

If he runs, he will win. I suspect he won't run, but I could definitely be wrong about that.

Birkel said...

So, a fopdoodle would like to assure people, again, that the law changes and U.S. District Court judges are free to assert their will -- instead of applying the laws of the nation -- because the president tweeted mean things.

And we're the dumb asses who aren't conservative?

All because you want Republicans to run on the Social Conservative Platform Guaranteed to Lose (SCPGL for short). Loosen your bow tie and your anal sphincter. The blood to your brain is overly restricted.

buwaya said...

"We'll do our best, but things will go more smoothly if you get the President to shut up on this issue"

But the real issue is that it matters that the President must "shut up on the issue".
The law should be the law no matter what anyone says.
That is, the real issue, of the corruption of institutions, is much larger than the issue of immigration policy.

This is a symptom of the autism of the procedurally-obsessed.

"lifelong republican" and Dem Defender Chuck: " "Please tell the President that he has screwed things up for us, with his Tweets and his stray comments,..."

The tweets are just an excuse for your lefty kindred spirits to completely disregard the law.

Trumps tweets are irrelevant as to the law.

Any "so called" lefty judge that seeks out the tweets as a basis for a ruling is establishing rules of men, not of laws and will bastardize any law to serve their own political purposes.

It's no wonder Chuck finds so much common cause with them.

Snark, John Oliver also said he would donate to the Trump campaign if Trump ran for president because Oliver was 100% sure he would lose.

Unless Oliver lied, Trump got some of the limey dolt's money.

Trump - 1
Oliver - 0

Yes, you guys on the left and "lifelong republican" side do have the late night insult zingers down pat!

It's been an effective strategy so I would double down on it if I were you.
