That wasn't a mistake. It was a statement. And then they wonder why a shrinking portion takes them with any seriousness whatever.

His reputation casts him more as the Tin Man, not the Scarecrow.

Whew, how about those comments over there? I guess I don't get out much.

Those comments are I am sure hateful postings by conservatives who are trying to besmirch the loving kindness of the left. Democrats care you know.

Somewhere around here, I have an NYT picture of the Rolling Stones where the caption read, "Cast of Marriage of Figaro at the Met."

They're jerks, of the highest order.

When you're used to basically decent and thoughtful blog commenters, the kinds of comments that are left on more mainstream sites -- e.g., newspaper articles with comment sections -- kind of take your breath away.

There's still a lot of stupid and mean in the world.

I'm with Chip Ahoy. This is not an "accident." Maybe not done by the NYT officially, but someone there did it on purpose.

As for the commenters, call it karma if you want, but I'm a believer in the concept that such bile-filled and hate-dripping vitriolic glee at the sad misfortune of someone they happen to disagree with politically will end up hurting them even more than the object of their hatred will ever suffer. I said the same thing when Ted Kennedy got sick.

I did find one of the first comments funny, though, where the commenter notes "There goes the NYT again, publishing statements without first checking the facts"!

All in good-natured fun, goring the correct ox (the sloppy paper). The more vitriolic partisan nonsense, not so much.

Fan or not, the typo itself was pretty hilarious. Typo humor running rampant lately -- this is genius: http://www.bitterlawyer.com/index.php/webisodes/?id=1&sess=1&web_id=NjI=
