Ann,

HELP! My Blogger account just got blocked! My blog has been disabled!

This happened immediately after I (very legitimately and with 100% substantiation) criticized Google in a comment thread.

WHERE can I go to fight this? I cannot even log onto my Google account.

So, what's the edgy new domain name?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Ann Althouse said...

Peter, you must know that you're the one who guessed it!

Patrick said...

OK, Prof. Althouse. Nice domain. In the thread asking commenters to guess, you were really just fishing for ideas, weren't you?!

SBVOR said...

Addendum to my previous comment.

False alarm. Somehow my blog was falsely flagged as a spam blog. This might be the same thing that happened to Ann?

Blogger.com wanted my cell phone number in order to restore my blog. Against my better judgement, I gave it to them. They sent me a text message containing a verification code and my blog was immediately restored (archives and all).

Google swears they're not being evil. I'm not entirely convinced.

Insurmountable in human history, as we live to decide (all of us in Chief if we are to accord our ideals epistoligical optimism notwithstanding the last three years) it, are our ideals, generously bequeated by our betters.

Not the idea or concept, but the application of government by, of, and for me. And them. Our countrymen.

Standing on those giants shoulders, I, laugh if you will, have the ultimate confidence musterable when I think of Reagan's, Lincolns, and Washingting's AMERICA.

Two hours of morel hunting today, finding:
1) baby fawn that scampered away
2)
a Meadow Frog
3) Lots of bones of dead whitetails which the kids somehow talked me into bringing home in a bag
4) Two small grey morels that were past their prime but were still great fun to find

All in all, a great way to spend a spring evening.

You are not alone.

Ann Althouse said...

"OK, Prof. Althouse. Nice domain. In the thread asking commenters to guess, you were really just fishing for ideas, weren't you?!"

No. Look back at that thread and you'll see that people saw it was already purchased. My son John thought of it. But Peter thought of it independently... With the "edgy" prompt.

I had thought of that idea of using the .us country code: altho.us. but I didn't make the jump to using a country other than my own. Theres no need to put the clunky .com at the end of everything I think the new era of urls is getting creative with the country codes.

I'm so glad Althouse.com and annalthouse.com weren't available so it pushed us into the country code zone and we found that.

From a marketing standpoint, ".se" makes no sense. "Althouse" is a brand - and the Madison Avenue adage goes: Never try to improve a good thing.

Clever, edgy, maybe. But you don't bet 7+ years on a creative whim.

Not to even mention Sweden.

Added: I see that you've added that it's legal. Today. But you're gambling on tomorrow.

Your tech guy is technically correct.

But there are semantic concerns, especially when you do this with something other than .tv. The semantic meaning will be that your blog is a Swedish one, in Swedish. That's how search engines will see it, and it may reflect on how they rank it (e.g. higher in Sweden, lower elsewhere). A "do you want to translate this page?" might also appear in some browsers (e.g. Google Chrome).

I've e-mailed you, Althouse, with an additional comment.

Pogo that is great news. Like you my wife means everything to me. She is your partner, your friend, you sounding board, the other person in the foxhole when there's incoming. To see her hurting tears at your heart. You can only be strong for her and let her know how much you love her and honor her and need her to get better. Love like yours shames the Arnolds and Spitzers and Edwards of this world and shows us that they are beneath our contempt and should not enter into our thoughts as other than comedy.

I will continue to pray for her and for you and your family and hope that she will walk out of the hospital with you hand and hand as you go on with your journey together.

God bless you dude and may God bless and heal her.

JAL said...

Hi Pogo.

I haven't been reading and had to go back and track your story.

I am glad Pogowife is stable. (More like better than one could have expected with that dx.)In another life I was a CV-ICU nurse.

If she is stable - and it seems she is, in the ICU kind of way -- that is good.

If your ICU and cardiac guys and gals are half as good as those I worked with, they can do miracles.

You are in our NC prayers.

Get some sleep.

Yup, May 21st. The crazy Christians even have a sponsored link on Google that leads to this very busy webpage. It's all very Heaven's Gate-ish. I wonder if we'll see suicides?

Melancholia opens in Denmark on May 26th. So the world might end five days after it didn't. The trailer looks great, tho'. I was sold once I heard the unforgettable voice of John Hurt.

As for Lars Von Trier... ugh... somebody should just kidnap him and force him on a plane to America, and then take him on a very friendly tour. That could be a plot for a movie itself.

Speaking of things Danish... This evening I've been watching some of the original Danish TV series The Killing, which apparently has been recently remade (to great acclaim!) by AMC. The original series (available with English subtitles) is spectacular... so spectacular, in fact, that I hesitate to see the AMC version because I'm afraid it'll be a let-down.

I don't trust my fellow Americans anymore after the way MTV mauled the exceptional British teen series Skins earlier this year.

You can look up the country codes in Wikipedia and see what the restrictions might be. As for Germany, it is available and frequently used in the creative fashion:

"In many of the Romance languages, e.g., Spanish, French, Romanian and Portuguese, "de" expresses the genitive of a noun (like "of" in English). This is exploited in domain registrations under the German TLD for romance language webhosts that offer customized sites, like elforo.de (theforum.of), cleverly encoding the site name into the URL path, such as elforo.de/wikipedia, meaning theforum.of/wikipedia. "de" is also a common romanization of the Japanese word for "by", so there is potential for sites to exploit this ("ryoko.de/bus" being travel by bus), but this has not been widely adopted."
