Best and worst Oscar fashions.

A nice slide show, beginning with Jennifer Lopez at her best.

My favorite is Stacy Keibler (whoever she is). Her dress is a fabulous gold vortex. Put it next to Meryl Streep's drape-y gold thing. But Meryl won the gold thing that is the statuette. Keibler had George Clooney, though.

ADDED: The NYT has a slide show grouped by color, and you can see Streep and Keibler on one page.

Keibler is a former wrestling personality who has made a ton of money doing basically nothing since leaving that business. Was also a former Ravens cheerleader, I think.

Lopez's number was ok, but let's just see what she's got...what's the point of wearing something like that??

Penelope Cruz looked the best when she came out on stage. Totally classy. Made my wife cheer out loud.

It's a sad statement about the fashion industry that Cruz is on the "worst" list in that first link.

It was among the worst because it was "so three years ago"? Totally astoundingly wrong.

I'm not even a fan of Penelope Cruz.

Meanwhile, I was a fan of the recent Muppets movie, and Flight of the Conchords, so seeing Brett McKenzie win was fun. But what is up with only 2 nominees in best song?! Who nixed the singing of the songs as part of the show?!

Meanwhile we get sappy self-congratulating statements from actors telling us how we should feel about how much we feel their work makes us feel.

Keibler was on Dancing with the Stars after her wrestling stint.

Streep still has it all. She is intelligent and she is all woman. Nice to see her getting recognition for her work again.

The best rated dresses were the vamp looks worn by the Divas. An innocent little girl look was not approved by the couture judges.

I didn't watch the Oscars.

I'll note that I didn't say I "missed" it.

Wait, George Clooney is dating a former wrestler!?

My favorite is Michelle Williams. I know she's the twee-est of twee. But, I think her dress is lovely.

Wonder how much Streep paid for those yards of bed cloth.

Jennifer Lopez's forehead is too big for that hairstyle.

I feel like it would bother me less to be on the "worst" list than it would to have my dress described as either "figure flattering" or "age appropriate" because you know they really mean fat or old.

traditionalguy said...

The vamp look says, "see what I have on display to everyone."

The traditional Streep gown says, "guess what I have that goes along with my personality, but you'll have to unwrap your present one on one."

Ugh.

Ann, some days,...

As a woman of a certain age myself, I resented the description of Glenn Close's gown as age appropriate. How is that anything but snark?

I can't help but think of the Westminister Dog Show. These women are primped, fussed over, trimmed, and coutured like show animals. There must be a part of their brains that after the third fitting says enough already. But maybe that's why they're there. Too much is never enough.....A word of sympathy for J-Lo. She is destined to spend the remaining years of her life working out on the stairmaster, going to bed hungry and submitting to painful surgical procedures.

Twee! That is the PERFECT word for Michelle Williams.

Stacey Keibler is just George Clooney's latest arm candy. He'll find someone else soon enough.

Lopez knows how to display her assets.

Michelle Williams doesn't appear to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. I got a chuckle yesterday morning when I glanced across an article where she was asked why she "chose" a certain outfit. Of course she couldn't answer since the choice is made by a stylist; instead of saying that she demurred ""You see something and like it, and it is hard to explain why until time passes.""

That was pretty awful.

How did they select between "Best" and "Worst"? A dartboard?

ic and Lars said it.

So did damikesc.

All.

Same diff, albeit Meryl will get to keep her statue forever.

Clooney is the working man's Robert Wagner. He's a man of his time and his time is running out. He's an alright actor when he's playing himself. The real work comes with keeping the idea of himself interesting and current.

Clooney's idea of acting is ducking his head and looking at you from under his eyebrow.

He'd have been laughed out of the biz 50 years ago.

Sorry, but Glen Close was nowhere even close to looking like a man in that movie she was nominated for.

Hilary Swank set the bar in Boys Dont Cry (2000)

Lopez' dress is either too tight or there's no way of loosely encasing that ass. Streep's is too loose, too much material. There's no denying that Gwyneth Paltrow, idiot that she is when she opens her mouth, is nevertheless a hell of a clothes horse.

Huzzahs for 50 year old Clooney shtooping that magnificent animal Kiebber.

Kiebler not Kiebber. Overexcited.

I like Michele Williams..

She was good in Blue Valentine (2010)

Fashion writers are just too weird. Melissa Leo is praised for wearing a sparkly bowling shirt with a self-belt; Kristin Wiig is described as "effortlessly beautiful". Kristin Wiig looks like the neighborhood paper girl, and her dress, instead of being a "romantic...nude number," is Grandma's old petticoat.

Penelope Cruz is stunning. Don't know what she did to fall out of favor or what she'll need to do to climb back into favor, but I hope she doesn't worry too much about it. She is criticized for wearing a princess dress but several slides later, Wendi McLendon-Covey is on the 'best' list for her 'princess-esque gown.'

Melissa McCarthy needs a better stylist. She's beautiful but her dress was chosen by someone who had no idea what do with her. She should sue.

Melissa Madsen...now, that's glamour.

Emma Stone's antics as a presenter were funny and she didn't have to read her lines from the teleprompter...so I decided to forgive that red thing that was strangling her. She's a charmer. Her personality makes the dress not matter.

Virginia Madsen, of course. Not Melissa.

I saw about ten minutes of the Oscars then I did the reserve Tim Leary out of utter boredom. Horrible. The Oscar producers/writers ought to hauled before the Hague court for crimes against humanity.

Evidently, though there was at least a bright spot -- the red carpet review which I didn't see and always avoid since I don't generally enjoy existential pain. But this year... wow, it's like haute couture has finally emptied the bucket of manure they've been dipping from since the 70s and rediscovered elegance. How refreshing! Even the lows were miles above the absolute nadir of fashion, the infamous meth-head chicken costume worn by that pathetic attention whore called Cher some years back. (Some people need shackles, jeez.)

I mostly agree with the NYT on the highs and lows, especially that dress worn by Sandra Bullock. It would have been improved 90% with a conventional neckline. As it is from the bust up it looks like something to be worn while having surgery. I didn't like Meryl Streep's outfit either. If Hugh Hefner was gay he'd wear it as a bathrobe. Maya Rudolf's number would have looked better worn back to front, and aubergine is a color for neckties only. The very best was worn by Giuliana Rancic (who the hell is that?) It's sad that the gown is more notable than the wearer.

The men were okay, but except for Colin Firth their clothes looked like rentals, good rentals that is. Firth evidently can afford a tailor, but the rest didn't seem interested enough. A real shame in the case of Sean Combs because just a little attention above the ankles and he'd have looked smashing. Branagh's trousers looked liked he borrowed them from his taller brother. Somebody should tell Brad Pitt that bad grooming on a wealthy man betokens a lack of respect for the rest of us, and Angelia Jolie's shameless tease routine is wearing thin. Yeah, you gotta great leg and there's something interesting up higher, but keep it discreet, will ya?

And I'm getting heartily fed up with Sasha Baron Cohen. btw.

I don't know who Rose Byrne is, but that is the perfect unity of woman and dress. Awesome.

Keibler is George Clowny's girlfriend for the next couple of years or so.

Weird, I thought Viola Davis looked fantastic, but that site has her first on what seems to be the worst-dressed list.
