"Wisconsin Dems furious with DNC for refusing to invest big money in Walker recall."

Writes Greg Sargent (who, I've observed, leans distinctly liberal):
The failure to put up the money Wisconsin Dems need to execute their recall plan comes at a time when the national Republican Party is sinking big money into defending Walker, raising fears that the DNC’s reluctance could help tip the race his way.

“We are frustrated by the lack of support from the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Governors Association,” a top Wisconsin Democratic Party official tells me. “Scott Walker has the full support and backing of the Republican Party and all its tentacles. We are not getting similar support.”...

“Scott Walker has made this a national election,” the Wisconsin Dem tells me. “If he wins, he will turn his victory into a national referendum on his ideas about the middle class. It will hurt Democrats nationally. The fact that [national Dems] are sitting on their hands now is so frustrating. The whole ticket stands to lose.”
It suggests that from the inside, the Democrats see Walker winning, and they don't want to spend their money this way. And if they're going to lose, they don't way it to seem as though they viewed this race as a national referendum. They'll want to refute that characterization if the Republicans use it. Denying Tom Barrett the money he needs now builds a foundation for minimizing Walker's win: He grossly outspent us. (By the way, Sargent never mentions the name Tom Barrett.)

Over on Intrade, Scott Walker winning the recall just hit 72.5%.

I'm pleased to learn that the GOP has tentacles, which are fucking badass. Having tentacles is almost as good as being a honey badger.

Scott Walker must have some Indian blood in him from frontier ancestors.

He certainly believes in taking no prisoners and hanging the union scalps from the Capitol Dome.

We will have to adopt him as an Honorary Atlanta Brave.

Not sure that would go over well in Milwaukee, General Lee.

Well, it does look good for Walker. However, your prediction and "gamble" last week was pitiful. You NEVER gamble w/ your heart or ego. You only gamble w/ your head. And, even then it's tough. However, attorneys are not gamblers and the few I knew who were the exception were horrible. They were "chasers". That's the gambler who has lost 3,4,5 bets in a row and triple their bet hoping their due.

Hey it's a win win for the Democrats. They don't spend money in Wisconsin so they can say Walker "bought the election", and they get to keep their cash. The Won needs it more--so tough noogies to you Wisconsin union members.

One needs to understand this in the context of "who's in charge"

I saw a related story the other day from the perspective of Congressional Dems. The DNC told them that the millions it is raising are going 95% to support Obama, screw you Congressional Dems. Cause the Big Dog needs the lucre.

WI Dems have got to be way down the food chain for Obama.

He needs:

- get reelected
- then maybe, hold the Senate
- who cares about the House
- Who cares about WI

Hopefully, it will bookend (and correct) the plunge that happened in 2008 when it became apparent that McCain would lose.

The DNC wants this whole WI recall thing to go away and NOT be a news issue by the time that the great mass of unengaged voters start paying attention to political news post-Labor Day. When Walker wins, the MSM will bury the whole thing and flush it down the memory hole, so by Labor Day nobody outside of WI will even remember that it happened.

If Walker lost, the Left will crow about it from now till the end of time (they got themselves a scalp!), and the ugliness of the whole thing (in particular the distinctly not-ready-for-prime-time presentation of most of the recallers) will stick with the undecideds and the independents for an election that really matters, not a good thing by the DNC...

This is just another example of a trend I find disgusting. It has been going on for decades, but the democrats are getting really obvious about it lately. Since 2000 it seems, when gore's loss unhinged them:

Tere are two ways to be a good politician.
Serve, or lead.

That is, study history, learn what works well, and make those into planks of our platform and sell it to the voters to get elected, then enact it.

Or learn what people want, make it your platform, run on it and enact it after election.

But democrats are a third type of politician:
Figure out what wins elections. Lie to the people to convince them ou will do those things to get elected, then after you are elected, do what gets you and your cronies rich, with an occasional bone thrown to the special interests to whet their appetite for more, to get elected again so you can again just do what you want.

Obama and his ilk (and his supporters here on this blog) are blatantly concerned with just one thing: getting him re-elected. Nothing else.
Obama and the media pick a topic..then they declare Obama a winner on the topic, and mitt and/or the GOP losers.
Doesn't matter if it has majority support or not. Doesn't
matter if it is good for the nation or the economy or not. Those things never come up.

Just winning.

The model for 2012 Obama campaign is Charlie Sheen, it seems.

Once again, there's the unquestioned assumption that money wins contentious elections.

I suspect that Obama would have won in 2008 with half the money.

Surely, a certain amount of money is required just to get name recognition, and a close election might hinge on campaigns' ability to push out their messages more, and more often.

By all appearances, this isn't even close.

For all their rhetoric that assumes that elections hinge entirely on money spent (this is of course self-serving rhetoric from people who get paid to run campaigns), the Democrats aren't stupid. I think they know exactly how much money might matter, as well as when and where.

Scott M said...

I think they know exactly how much money might matter, as well as when and where.

Wouldn't that require the Democrats in Wisconsin to have an almost flawless read on the voters? It is looking more and more like they completely misjudged this one.
