"Walter Riedl...figured the only way to keep his wife safe was to give the gunman the keys to his truck and volunteer to become his hostage."

"The 69-year-old Riedl told Linda, his sweetheart since high school, not to cry, that everything was going to be OK...."
Driving Riedl’s 2004 GMC 2500HD pickup truck — a cattle trailer still attached with a cow inside of it — [James] Kruger drove erratically and acted irrationally as he sought to elude police, Riedl said. Opportunities to escape eluded him.

As they approached Dodgeville on Highway 18, he knew the city’s two traffic lights would give him a chance to jump out.

“First time in my life we got two green lights,” Riedl said.

Still, he never panicked...

According to the article, potential charges could include rustling. I say "Pile the charges on like a Dagwood sandwich," lock him up and throw away the key.

Um, why?

Kidnapping at gunpoint should be sufficient to have the gunman locked away for a long time.

Piling on charges is like the DA saying We're not sure any of these will result in conviction because of shoddy work on our part, so we're going to charge him with enough crimes that we can keep trying 'til we get the outcome we want.

It helps if you insert a rimshot after the word trying :)

Interesting contrast to the SWAT team who shot the 107-year-old man to death last week.

But isn't it sexist for him to deny his wife this life experience and growth due to her sex. Clearly he did not think she was capable of handling this due to her gender. Shame on him.

@ Madison Man

Not to mention that he murdered his uncle to get the guns he stole. However, given that we have a judge out there giving a 30-day sentence for statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl who ended up committing suicide, I don't have a whole lot of confidence in our judicial system these days. You'd think that murder and kidnapping could get at least life without parole, but there are some real idiots out there, some of whom wear black robes.

Riedl is a fine example of the folks in flyover country whom the urban sophisticates running Washington DC derogate as bitter clingers. We need more Riedls in DC applying common sense, and more TV celebrity/politicians working on farms for minimum wage to learn the common sense they've avoided all their lives.
