Nice.

Wow. I'm surprised the bear tolerated what was pretty rough treatment.

I always like it when people do something instead of letting things happen.

Wild animals often will cooperate when they are in distress. Not always. I'm not sure why they do it.

Hey, baby boomers! Remember those combination chair and desk with a wooden top and a metal tub-shaped bottom? In about 1964 one of my elementary school classmates put one finger up through the drain hole and got it stuck during class time. He eventually raised the other hand to report his predicament. Our female teacher contacted the male principal who dragged the student-and-desk combination out into the hall, drilled a second hole near the first one, and used a hack saw to cut over to the first hole so he could pry the metal open.

I don't remember the kid's name but I sure remember that day!

Watching that video, I have to believe the bear understood they were rendering aid.

Poor bear and good bear.. it didn't stick around to attack the humans who helped it..

The reporter says "Call the authorities" because regular ole citizens can't figure out how to help the bear. F**k that advice. Those people did the right thing!

We do not need the authorities to help us do things people have been doing for ages. (And please don't say "if the bear was bigger........ I am sure the measures taken would be different by the people that helped because they do have brains after all. Not everyone has lost their brains since Zero became president. )

The authorities have "helped" more than a few animals by shooting them. Officer safety, you know. I wouldn't mess with this bear but, if you're going to do anything, what these people did is best.

The fact that it didn't stick around to attack once it was free didn't surprise me. The fact that it allowed itself to be man-handled for several minutes did.

Didn't he replace Slash as the lead guitarist for Guns & Roses?

Grundeen, I did the same thing... Except it wasn't my finger.

While I applaud these folks for their courage & initiative, I couldn't help but wince when the solo guy at the beginning chases the bear around trying to pull the bucket off its head.

I kept thinking that if that bear ever connected with one of those front paws, claws & all, that guy was going to be in a world of hurt.

I'm not a sentimentalist when it comes to wild animals, especially those with teeth and claws, but if you have any compassion at all and a little courage it would be hard to do nothing. Good on these guys.

If nothing else, the bear will remember it was gang tackled and tortured by a group of people, so it will only attack lone humans.

Every once in a while I get to feel good about our species. Lately that's been more and more rare.

It depends on who gets the call. A lot of cops would've shot the bear. Animal control people would be more likely to tranqualize the bear, remove the pot, and move him to a remote location before he wakes. Safer for the officials, safer for the bear, and safer for the people who want to help.

I wonder how many graduate degrees were represented by that group of rednecks that actually stepped up and did something while all the smart people stood around talking about the situation for over a month?

Yeah. It's not smart to help people let alone dumb animals which are not smart. In fact the smart thing to do would have been to somehow exploit that bear while it's was vulnerable. Now that would have been smart! That's what Althouse likes.
