In Madison, Wisconsin, the Farmers Market returned to the Capitol Square today.

The farmers were there...

What exactly is a fried cheese curd ? Sounds weird. But Wisconsin being the Cheese State, I can imagine those fried cheese curds are probably pretty tasty.

I could help the farmer and his chair with my sandblaster.

Not so much with his girth...

Walker certainly has earned his hatred.

Is that Garage on the 3-wheeler?

Birkel said...

Yes, harrogate. Governor Walker should know better than to sign legislation that hurts his opponents' scheme to launder money to those very same political opponents. How dare he commit the act of freeing workers to choose to remit union dues?

Now that unions are competing for dollars, how are they doing?

Dontcha know that parasites hate the host even if they can't live without them.

The Walker haters never really leave. When Walker is gone, they'll find a new target for their eternal hatred.

Yes, nothing earns hatred from the left more than saving money and cutting costs.

Yeah, typical Progressive stuff. Seen it in several towns we've lived in.

1. Some Progressive on the City Council proposes a Farmers' Market ..maybe because there is FEDERAL GRAND MONEY AVAILABLE FOR IT AND IF WE DON'T TAKE IT SOME OTHER CITY WILL!!!
..maybe just to pump the City for an ALL AMERICAN CITY designation.

2. Location is found, sponsors rounded up, publicity released, etc.

3. The GREAT KICK-OFF
..a few genuine local farmers may show up (like the guy selling rabbits and poultry which nobody is buying.
..a few street vendors hawking produce from the back of a pickup - stuff they bought wholesale from a local produce warehouse.
..a few vendors marginally or not at all related to farms and produce - maybe balloon vendors or the guy selling deep fried cheese curds (plenty of customers lined up for this hearth-healthy vitamin rich snack).

4. Within about two months, attendance fades. Either the project is totally abandoned, or it is reduced to the balloon vendors and maybe a produce re-seller. Real farmers, if they happen to be in town, might stop by for a snack if the fried cheese curd vendor is still there.

5. Four to five years pass, and a Progressive City Councilperson proposes the City start a Farmers Market ...

The people who want peace, have they considered going to the Middle East and making their case to ISIS instead of lobbying statues of long-dead soldiers?

If you observe the Madison farmers market across the street you will see a slow, sullen mass of zombie-like humanity slowly oozing in the same direction around the Capitol building. Not one of them moves as an individual.

Ya, sure. Nothing says Farmers Market like Cheese Curds, Social Justice Warriors and Walker Haters.

Madison sucks.

Farmer's Markets are the petting zoos of American agriculture. OK, I didn't make that up, VDH did. But I love it for how perfectly it encapsulates the lightweight hypocrisy of the white middle-class Left. Before you tell me that you're a conservative and love the organic beets you get at your local farmer's market, know this-I'm not talking about you.

End poverty wages indeed. And since you care so much, start your own business. Pay everyone $15-18 an hour to start. And don't force them into the Health Care pool, where the cost and the deductibles are high. Provide your employees with a low cost, low deductible health care plan. They will flock to your door. Hey, it could work. Go for it, all you caring individuals. Start today.

Not Madison because (1) a city surrounded by actual farms with actual farmers (2) inhabited by affluent people who love to pay top dollar for the products the farmers grow and tend. Thus leading to a profit for the farmers and other assorted vendors.

Madison is a liberal heaven, maintained in its celestial glory by well paid government workers, academics, lawyers and lobbyists, medical service providers and some profitable businesses.

You can always have "peace".

All you have to do is surrender.

Of course, you might also have to be willing to swallow the "peace of the grave" but hey, that's a small price to pay for adherence to an adolescent set of "principles".

We're back to your ignorance of Islam and history. Muslims don't care if you mind your own business. Their prophet and God have both commanded them to convert you to Islam or kill you.

To question this command is punishable by death.

We are their business.

"What exactly is a fried cheese curd ?"

Remember Little Miss Muffet and her curds and whey? Both are byproducts of cheese manufacturing. I'm a born and bred Badger and I never heard of fried cheese curds until I moved back to Wisconsin from the East Coast a dozen years ago. Some thrifty person discovered that the curds, which were normally discarded, tasted wonderful if breaded and fried. They are about the size of chicken nuggets and are sold in the same qualities (6-8 is an usual serving)as chicken nuggets.

They can be addictive, especially when they're just out of the frier, and it's not at all difficult to use up your weekly cholesterol quota in one sitting scarfing them down.

I've sampled them all over the state, but I swear the best ones I have had are the ones we got in the Dycksville bowling alley, when we were heading to Door County. Dycksville is in Kewannee (sp?) County between Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay and if you blink you'll miss it. It consists of a church, a gas station, the Tasty Freeze ice cream shop and the bowling alley. Those bowling alley cheese curds are heavenly, with a very light, crispy coating. It's become a mandatory stop for us on the way up to Fish Creek. Once I get my fried cheese curd fix in, I'm set for about 3 months or so.

I love the market - we hit it if it is open when we visit my son - I do like the popcorn and I don't mind the price as it goes direct to the farm. I was once asked by a peace-nick if I enjoyed the Israelis killing the poor innocents -- I said yes both to see the reaction- and because the Islamist won't stop until they are dead or we are dead or converted, so better them than me. My son was so embarrassed-- not the one who lives there -- he enjoyed the show. No, it was the youngest -- he says let them protest in peace. But they weren't -- the guy got in my face and I answered -- it did embarrass the boy -- but I'm the Dad--part of my job. As Bush would say: "Mission Accomplished." Except he didn't really say that, you know. PS -- I'm liking Walker -- he has a lot more experience than your average community organizer or the wife of a disbarred lawyer.

As you can imagine, we have similar markets and gatherings in Burlington. One time I tried to engage a 9-11 troofer but quickly discovered that he was mentally retarded, or whatever you call it now, and I felt bad. After that, I just ignored the crazies.

Mark said...

Katrina got it completely wrong about cheese curds, and which were never 'normally discarded'. You don't make cheese from whey ...

When you make cheddar, the first step is souring the milk which creates whey and curds. Once you drain and remove the whey, then you compress and age the curds to get cheddar cheese.

How are you from Wisconsin and have never visited a cheese factory or brewery?

Why didn't anyone explain this basic "fact" to Thomas Jefferson?

@Gahrie:

"We're back to your ignorance of Islam and history. Muslims don't care if you mind your own business. Their prophet and God have both commanded them to convert you to Islam or kill you."

Yeah, that's what you have a national defense and security service for. To protect your country from people who may want to do you harm. Refereeing sectarian civil wars in the middle east do not seem to do much to add to that cause. ISIS attempted an incursion into Lebanon and was quickly repelled. These are the people that have you quaking in your boots? You know, if you want to claim to be a citizen of the "home of the brave," it might help to actually act like it on occasion.

@Rusty:

"And aircraft carriers."

Sure, because when you have committed yourself to an unwinnable war against guerilla insurgents where you have no conceivably reliable way of telling the "good guys" from the "bad guys," a multibillion dollar aircraft carrier is going to come in real handy.

@Drago:

"Why didn't anyone explain this basic 'fact' to Thomas Jefferson?"

Not sure exactly what you are referring to. If it's Jefferson's war against the barbary pirates, it has nothing to do with our current military adventurism in the middle east. Commenters here seem to have difficulty distinguishing between pacifism and a prudent desire not to fight other people's battles for them.

They always do.

Counter insurgency works, but you have to be prepared to spend years at it. Democrats don't have the attention span.

@Rusty:

"What size navy should we have, J.Farmer?"

I would be comfortable with a 25% across the board reduction in the size of our military.

"Counter insurgency works, but you have to be prepared to spend years at it. Democrats don't have the attention span."

So how many more years do you think we need to spend in Afghanistan before the Taliban has been defeated? How will we know when it has been defeated?
