"Wow, I hate everything about this."

A much-favorited comment in a Metafilter thread titled "WHAT KIND OF HAT IS IT? I call it a fedora" about a NYT piece called "The Men of Condé Nast Photographed in Their Natural Habitat."

Strange but true fact: I happened to be wearing a fedora when I ran across that.

Purely for a practical reason, by the way. Stops the light from the window from interfering with my computer-screen vision.

The only hat I own now is my Nathans Hot Dog baseball cap.

It seems to fit my personality, or lack there-of...

So Coupe?

Is it "coop?" Or "cou-pay?"

Etienne said...

Oh definitely coo-pay, I'm a W.C. Fields fan from way back, although I'm too shy to use the accent character.

I looked at some of the folks at Conde (with an accent) Nast, and the guy named Wackermann made me giggle.

That's not as bad as the guy I went to school with, who's name was Randy Hoar. His parents must have spent a few years laughing.

My children bought me such a hat; But, they wanted me to pull it all the way down and over all of my face.

You need one of those green celluloid visors.
And paper cuffs to keep the pixels from staining your sleeves.

Questions. How often do either you or Meade sit in that cowcliner behind you? And how comfortable is it?

Asking for a friend.

The "cowcliner" isn't that useful as seating. You can change the position of it but not to any positions I find that useful. Doesn't much work for reading. I like it sculpturally, and it's a famous design, but I wouldn't recommend spending too much money on the darned thing. If you like it, however, you can get it at Design Within Reach.

Thanks Ann. I didn't think it looked all that comfortable, or maybe better as you put it - useful, but it is striking. And cow!

I usually wear a ball cap. I do have a fedora and a leather jacket to match. No whip, though. Not "the full Indy".

I didn't see the hat. Had to go back and look. I call it a jazz man's hat, and I keep recommending Spare Heir Sippican wear one. If flat-topped, it's a saxophonist's hat IMO.

Try a Sombrero next time. They really keep the sun off.

Ah, but are you also using Fedora on the computer?

His hat looks more like a trilby than a fedora, but it's hard to tell from the photo.

I was amused by the man who wears a boutonniere for a "little hit of color that isn’t a pocket square or a tie". I know that white is a color, but if I were wearing something for its ability to add color, I'd probably pick a different one. Maybe I'm not creative enough to get it.

Spiffy lid, there, perfesser.

Hat is ok, but what about those expanses of empty white walls. Going seriously minimalist there. Why not try a white on white work, for that retro-conceptualist feel? Would work with the books, too. Or just a large scale doodle, perhaps using something from those sketchbooks of a long-ago tour of the continent?

Life abhors a vacuum.

Christ, get some sun.

It does wonders for the psyche, and I doubt you have to fear any association with the peasants.

I have three: A Black one, a Brown one, and a Grey one. Depends on the suit I wear when we go out.

I'm hoping to start a trend where men where hats (and not baseball caps) again.

Nobody wears a black fedora after Easter.

I had a man pop up out of foot traffic and photograph me today. I ducked left because I thought he wanted a street scene but he tracked me instead. It was probably because I was wearing a broad-brimmed Panama hat (the sun was bright today) -- the same thing happened once on the beach in California.

Did you turn your head really fast right before that picture?

mccullough said...

The young guy in the picture is wearing a trilby with the front of the brim turned up. The trilby is the fedora's little brother. It has a slightly smaller crown and a smaller brim. And the brim is usually turned up in the back and snapped down in the front.

Maybe it's because you have no nose.
