Eradicating river blindness.

I'm reading about William C. Campbell, "a master's and doctoral graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, [who] was awarded a share of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine."
River blindness... has been nearly eradicated thanks to Campbell's discoveries and the work of the Carter Center, which, working with the drug manufacturer Merck, has distributed more than 225 million free doses of the drug....

Congratulations to Dr. Campbell for a well-deserved reward.

"The Carter Center is a nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter.... Since 1996, the Center has been a leader in the fight against onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness – a parasitic disease transmitted by the bites of black flies. The Center has worked to stop the spread of the disease in 11 countries across Africa and the Americas by helping residents and local health workers institute and sustain drug treatment programs and health education activities. The international river blindness campaign seeks to eliminate the disease from the Western Hemisphere by 2015.  The Center has distributed more than 125 million doses of Mectizan (ivermectin)– a drug donated by Merck & Co., Inc., that treats and prevents river blindness."

Don't forget to thank Jimmy Carter.

Thank you President Jimmy Carter. You actually live and carry out your work based on your deeply held Christian values while most Republicans just bleat about being against women's privacy and gay marriage. You are the true Christian President Carter. The Tea Party hillbillies that now dominate the Republicsn Party are just going to hate.

Jimmy Carter is a mixture of stubborn pride and good deeds. Thank God for the good deeds. The Carter Center at Emory does attract many good men and women from all over the world to the university.

@Althouse, yes, thanks to Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama I've lived through the tenures of two of the three worst presidents in history. I appreciate that. Some of my neighbors in 1979 were in real estate and they couldn't sell any houses with mortgage rates around 16% or higher. I felt bad for them, but to you people like them, other folks who couldn't get jobs in Carter's economy, that's all collateral damage to a college professor who wants to feel good about herself and doesn't much care about the rest of the country outside her ivory tower.

Trust me, ma'am, if the Carter Center does any good at all, it's only because Jimmy isn't involved in its daily operations.

Once written,

Sounds like you spend a lot of time with the Tea Party hillbillies. Of course, I'm sure that's when you aren't watching FAUX News.

My three prescriptions for BP and cholesterol costs me $50 a YEAR! I told the young man at the pharmacy that surely they couldn't afford to give away these life saving drugs. Damned evil BIG PHARMA!

I'll not thank that arrogant prick, Jimmy Carter. He's like a Silicon Valley zillionaire: he dipped his hand into the flow of money and power, and he did it in a way that diverted some resources toward some good things. Then he held up his hand and thought, wow, I'm good.

He's good because he commands resources? That's Trumpthink.

Once written, twice dumb says: "...while most Republicans just bleat about being against women's privacy and gay marriage. "

Wow, you really have no clue, do you?

Are there no ultimate philosophical questions pertaining to the taking of life involved in the abortion ("privacy") issue?

Are there no deep philosophical questions regarding freedom of action to participate or not in others' sins/lifestyle choices?

Were and are Tea Party "hillbillies" not founded for and focused exclusively on issues pertainining to the exploding national debt and ever rising taxes?

No? Ok, then, call me a name; that'll do just fine.

As for Jimmah, yes thank you for making Reagan possible.

Big Mike, what specifically did President Carter do to tank the economy? He cut taxes. Was that it?

Our economy tanked because we were dependent on foreign oil and throughout the 70s there were the oil shocks. President Carter set us on the path of being energy independent and Republicans have fought it every step of the way.

How did a story about the near-eradication of river blindness degenerate into this rock throwing free for all?

Excellent science, good corporate conduct, effective coordination with non-profit organizations, and eradication of misery-causing parasitic illness.

Hard to find negatives in this story, but Debbie Downers can always find a way.

It was "politicized" by the hostess praising the second worst president ever for loaning his name to people who actually did something great.

Big Mike said...

Reagan demonstrated that the way to deal with the oil shocks was not to ration -- people who didn't really need the gasoline had the same access to it as people who were desperate for it -- but to let the prices rise naturally. Like most Democrats, Carter never saw a problem he couldn't solve by throwing money and bureaucracy at it. Why he blamed the citizens of the US for our supposed "malaise" when he did everything in his power to stifle their entrepreneurial spirit is utterly beyond me.

Big Mike said...

@BN, third worst. You forget Barack Obama and James Buchanan.

I think it is also fair to point out that our most recent Democratic ex presidents, President Carter and President Clinton, have dedicated a good part of their post presidency years to doing good deeds. In contrast, Nixon, Reagan, Bush and Shrub just feathered their own personal nests. Disgraceful.

Wow, Once Written has absolutely no clue what they're talking about.

You can NOT be serious if you think Clinton does less to have "feathered [his] own bed" than President George W. Bush.

Are you auditioning for the Onion?

JAORE said...

Oh yeah, YEA Jimmah, Yea Clinton Foundation. Some of Jimmah's actions have great results. Some (tiny) part of the Clinton Foundation money goes to good causes.

I think Bill Gates was the one who supplied the funding for this project. It wasn't all that much money--a few hundred million dollars. That kind of money was available to any number of African states, but Bill Gates was the one who did it.

What twice foolish forgets to mention those two ex-Democrat presidents have a lot to atone for.

As for those countries, what exactly do they have governments for? There is always money for the presidential palace and jet but never for anything essential.

Big Mike said...

@Once written, two quick questions. How much money did the Clinton Foundation raise for Haitian relief, and how much money actually got to Haiti?

Just to be nice, I won't compare and contrast Dubya's daughter Barbara working with AIDS patients in Africa and founding her own highly-regarded health care non-profit with Chelsea Clinton's going to work as an investment banker after college or Amy Carter's puerile activism before she got married and disappeared from public view.
