"And now Mary’s aggression on this subject is getting a lot less passive!"

"You two love birds keep doing what you’re doing, which is enjoying the physical aspects of the sex act without true emotional intimacy! We have things under control here, unlike you, who can’t even control your engorged genitals!"

Ah, the unintentional hilarity of Mary Worth far outdoes the intentional humor of any other part of the comics page.

Me: Clicks on link.

What did I just read?

Don't want to delve too deeply into the context of that observation, but if you want some dark stuff from the "more innocent" past, check out 1930s offbeat movies. Insane fight scenes between married couples that really got very dark and abusive compared to even those in the '40s and definitely the '50s.

We read MW to discuss who needs to die the most. They pretty much all do.

It took me a while, I don't read the funnies anymore, probably because I never read printed newspapers anymore, but I think he has Mary Worth dead to rights.

Dick Tracy
July 5, 1950
Four Panel Comic Strip
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Panel 1: Nighttime. A man awakens on the shore of a river with his hands bound behind his back. “Bound with wire! But what happened? Who did this?”

Panel 2: The man’s hands are shown in a close up. “The wire—it’s cutting my wrists. AHA! But it’s rusty—brittle—easily broken.”

Panel 3: An older man is submerged in the darkened river with only his head visible. The river man is watching the bound man make his escape from the wire. “The knave hasn’t spotted me—and I pray he won’t. If only someone would come. What? He’s freed his hands!”

Panel 4: Downstream three men are standing on a dock beside the river. A small boat is tied to the dock. The men are visible in silhouette against the river. Two of the men seem to be in uniform. The other man has an object in his hand and is displaying it to the uniformed men. “But, officer, It’s a human head! Look! A small head like a child’s!”

1950! In a comic strip in a mainstream paper. Nobody would try to get that past an editor today.

The Dick Tracy strip is a lot more shocking than Mary Worth. Just a different kind of head.

Don't know what gets the most hits on Ann's blogroll, but I always go straight to The Comics Curmudgeon right after my daily Althouse read.

No. I did a quiet deletion. He questioned me and I gave a serious, respectful, totally honest answer.
